Grant Process & Guidelines

Community Grants at the Putnam County Community Foundation is a two-step competitive process consisting of a Preliminary Grant Application round and Full Grant Application round for those selected in the Preliminary round.

Preliminary Grant Application: The Community Foundation receives many excellent proposals and regrets that funding limitations restrict the number of proposals it is able to support.  This simple, two-page form allows the Community Foundation to learn about charitable projects in the community and evaluate potential grantees with minimal expense and trouble on the part of the applicants.

Grant Application Screening: Each grant application will be screened by Community Foundation staff.  Incomplete applications will not be reviewed by the committee, and the organization will be notified in writing.  Late applications will be considered in the following grant cycle. Each complete preliminary grant application will be reviewed and researched by the Grants Committee and Community Foundation staff.

Full Grant Application: A number of applicants may be selected to submit a Full Grant Application. This application requires more detail and includes a "Fact-Finding" meeting with 1 or 2 fact-finders from the Grants Committee to better understand the project and address concerns that may arise by either the applicant or the committee.

Grant Decisions : The Board of Directors relies upon the work of the Grants Committee and staff to inform its decisions.   Following completion of all applicant Fact-Finding, the committee meets to review the information gathered and recommendation of the fact-finders. The full Grants Committee then makes recommendations to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors review the recommendations of the Grants Committee at their monthly meeting in April or October before approving the grants.

Applicants who are not awarded grants will be notified by mail. Grant recipients are notified of grant awards mail or email. A Grant Awards breakfast is held twice annually to celebrate and make check presentations.
