Purpose of Fund
The primary purpose of the Fund shall be to provide financial support to the Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, a not-for-profit agency under Code section 501(c)(3), located at 307 Simpson Street, Greencastle, IN 46135. Funds will be used for the general support of operations and projects of the Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church.

History of Fund
Robert Spencer Eccles was born in Puyallup, Washington. He received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Puget Sound in 1934; a master's in theater studies from Northwestern University in 1943, a bachelor of divinity from Garrett Theological Seminary in 1944, and a doctorate in Religion from Yale University in 1952. He taught in the Philosophy and Religion Department at DePauw University from 1953 until his retirement in 1977, and served as chairman of the Philosophy and Religion Department from 1974-77. He was a member of the United Methodist clergy and had served as dean of the Indiana Area's Local Pastor's License School. From childhood, Eccles was a member and supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, serving in many capacities at the local and council levels. He received the Boy Scouts of America's highest adult service and leadership award, the Silver Beaver, from the Wabash Valley Council in the early 1980s. Robert passed away in 2007

Kathryn Eccles was born in Ashtabula, Ohio. She graduated from Orwell High School and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Hiriam College, Ohio, and her master's degree in counseling from Indiana University. She worked at the DePauw University Alumni Office and as the executive secretary of the president of the university, retiring in 1994. She was a member of the Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, the Tuesday's Reading Circle, past president of the Putnam County Hospital Guild, and a board member with the A-Way Home Shelter. She also served on many boards and commissions for the South Conference of the United Methodist Church. Kathryn passed away Aug. 24, 2006.

The Robert and Kathryn Eccles Memorial Stewardship and Church Growth Endowment was established in December of 2007 with an initial gift of $12,500 from an anonymous donor. The fund, which memorializes the Eccles, will give income to Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church operations and projects in perpetuity.
