Reelsville Alumni Scholarship Fund

Year Founded
1993

Founder

Alumni and Friends of the Washington Township Schools

Purpose of Fund
The primary purpose of the fund shall be to provide scholarships to eligible graduates of South Putnam High School, Putnam County, Indiana who are graduates of Reelsville Elementary School to attend a regionally accredited college or university or a state approved professional, vocational, technical, or business school full-time.

History of Fund

After suggesting that the Reelsville Alumni should establish a scholarship for a Washington Township graduate of South Putnam High School, James D. Thomas was placed on the committee and served as chairperson and treasurer until there was about $20,000 in the endowment. All profits from a book he had compiled, entitled Daily Thoughts and Golden Gems, were donated to the Alumni Scholarship Fund. Robert Taylor and James Thomas were established as the original fund stewards.

James D Thomas, Ph.D. and Professor Emeritus from West Virginia State College entered Purdue University in 1943 and spent twenty-one months in the U.S. Coast Guard assigned to carrying diesel fuel and airplane gasoline in the Philippines. Subsequent to receiving a B.S. degree in Agriculture Education, Thomas devoted thirty-nine and a half years to the field of Education as a High School Teacher, Principal of a 1-12 school, Supervisor of High Schools (Lake County), instructor at Purdue University, State Coordinator of Pre-service Education, Director of Teacher Education for West Virginia, Chair of Education Dept, Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Assistant to the President. Thomas was involved with youth and the community through 4-H Club, FFA, teaching, church work, club sponsor, and student adviser—has kept me involved with youth and the community.

By James D. Thomas (2004)

Donations to the Reelsville Alumni Scholarship Endowment have been received from Reelsville Alumni far and wide. Marie Chadwick left a significant bequest to the Scholarship in her will in 2002.
