History of Fund
The Clinton Township Scholarship is the Community Foundation’s first endowment.  The history of the Fund is a remarkable success story – a story of the power of good ideas and hard work.   Here is how it happened.

Back in 1986 the Clinton Township school alumni met to discuss ways to remember the school, their teachers, and classmates.  The high school closed in 1947, and the grade school in 1967.  As a result of this discussion, a decision was made to establish a perpetual scholarship in memory of the school for students living in Clinton Township.

A fund drive was initiated with the goal of raising $10,000.  This goal was achieved, and the Clinton Township alumni were then faced with the question of how to invest and manage the fund.  Who would be responsible for investing the money?  Where would it be invested?  How would all the records be maintained and the necessary forms filed with the appropriate government agencies?  Who would maintain the record of individual donations?  How would the alumni remain current on government rules and regulations pertaining to scholarship funds?

Fortunately for the Clinton Township alumni, the Putnam County Community Foundation had just been established by a small group of citizens interested in improving life in Putnam County.  At that time the Foundation was an unknown organization with word of its existence and purpose spread only by word of mouth.  Fortunately one of the Clinton Township alumni, John J. Brackney, was involved in the creation of the Foundation, and it was John Brackney who suggested we place our money with the Putnam County Community Foundation.  He assured the alumni the Foundation would invest the money in a safe and secure manner, maintain all of the appropriate records, and file whatever forms were necessary with the appropriate government agencies.  Based on John Brackney's reputation for honesty and trustworthiness, it was an easy decision for the alumni to place their fund with the Putnam County Community Foundation.

With the assistance of the Putnam County Community Foundation, Clinton Township alumni now are in the position to award a new four-year scholarship of $1,000 per year.   This is an excellent example of how the Putnam County Community Foundation partners with caring people in the community to make dreams come true.
