Asbury Towers Endowment for Continuing Education in Nursing
Purpose of Fund
The primary purpose of the Fund shall be to provide educational financial support to a current employee of Asbury Towers wishing to pursue continuing education in nursing.
History of Fund
Ellen and John Dittmer established in 2004 the Mabel G. Tobey Fund for Continuing Education in Nursing for several reasons. They wished to honor Ellen's mother, Mabel G. Tobey, who passed away in 2004. Second, they wished to thank and recognize the dedicated staff at Asbury Towers who cared so tenderly for Ellen's mother during her final years. Last, as Ellen stated, "You just have to give."
Mabel Garton Tobey was the fourth daughter in a poor family of seven children and grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. She married her husband, Raymond, an electrical engineer, in 1933 and became a mother in 1937. Church and family were the center of her life. An accomplished homemaker, Mabel had a special ability to fix anything not up to par...from scratched floors to worn furniture. Anyone who sewed a sleeve in wrong or had a knitting project gone awry knew who could get the project back on track. Mabel not only fixed the problem, but also gave assistance that advanced them two steps!
The family moved from Springfield to Evansville, Indiana in 1950. As children Eldon and Ellen grew up, Mabel began helping in a newly created program for children with disabilities. For twenty years "Tobey" spent two mornings a week with the children, always choosing to remain a volunteer because she had no "professional" qualifications.
Mabel spent her final years at Asbury Towers in the care of people who, like her, believed in helping others.
On June 23, 2008 the fund's name was changed to Asbury Towers Endowment for Continuing Education in Nursing. The legacy lives on.
