The primary purpose of the Fund shall be to provide financial support for the operations of Crisis Pregnancy Center of Putnam County, Greencastle, Indiana 46135.

History of Fund

James Hammond was born on March 23, 1929 to Ross N. and Opal (Hurst) Hammond. He was a 1947 graduate of Greencastle High School

where he participated in basketball and baseball. After high school, he earned a Bachelor's Degree in 1951, and later, a Master's Degree in Education from Indiana State University. While at ISU, Jim met Ethel Thompson and they were married on August 12, 1951. Jim's first teaching job was in 1951 at New Winchester where he was also a coach. He was later drafted into the United States Army. During his time in the US Army, he worked as a radio operator and taught at the Army Education Center in Munich, Germany from 1951-1953. After returning from Germany, he continued his career as an educator in Putnam County and Hendricks County for the next 40 years serving as a teacher, coach, and administrator. While in the South Putnam School Corporation and Mill Creek School Corporation, he was not only the first principal at both Cascade and South Putnam high schools, but he was also a superintendent at both school corporations. Jim and his brother, Ed, farmed together for a while. They planted corn, beans, hay, and raised some cattle. Ethel still owns their farm. Jim and Ethel raised three children, two sons and a daughter. All three children followed Jim into the education field.

Outside of his education career, Jim was a member of the Greencastle Christian Church. He served as an elder and a Sunday school teacher for many years. He was also involved in many other service and professional organizations. At the time of his death, he was serving as president of the Board of Directors for the Crisis Pregnancy Center of Putnam County. Jim played an instrumental role in the founding of the Crisis Pregnancy Center. Jim, along with his wife Ethel and Shelley McFadden, attended 13 weeks of training in order to become counselors. Ethel counseled teens for 12 years. Prior to Jim's death, he had been working for weeks on the Crisis Pregnancy Center preparing it for its opening. Jim passed just before Easter in 1994. The Center opened 2 months later. After Jim's death, the Center established the James M. Hammond fund at the Foundation to benefit the Center. To honor Jim, the Center currently presents the annual James M. Hammond to the outstanding volunteer each year at their annual banquet.
