Year Founded
1994

Founder
Greencastle Housing Authority Emergency Shelter

Purpose of Fund
Provide operating support for the Greencastle Housing Authority Emergency Shelter.

History of Fund
The Greencastle Housing Authority Emergency Shelter Endowment was started in 1994 with $500 donated by Joseph Taylor, Max Johnson, Marvin Clifford, and Dan Smith. The paperwork was signed by Max Johnson, Executive Director of the Greencastle Housing Authority.

Greencastle Housing, Inc. did business locally as the Away Home Shelter. It was named locally through a contest with local school children. Children were given the opportunity to submit ideas of a name for the future shelter. Jessica Moore’s idea of a “home-away-from-home” shelter was chosen by the Directors of the Greencastle Housing Authority.

The Greencastle Housing Authority began participating in the Community Foundation’s Endowment Builder program in 2006 and the endowment grew from $4,367 in September 2006 to $24,000 in December 2007. The Community Foundation matched contributions in an amount totaling $6,572.19. The Away Home Shelter closed in the fall of 2011. On April 1, 2013, the Board completed a review of the Greencastle Housing Authority Emergency Shelter Fund Agreement, request letter, documents, and donors and concluded that annual distributions from the Endowment could be released to the Greencastle Housing Authority for unrestricted use in accordance with its mission and purpose in perpetuity.
