Hardman Family

Year Founded
2000

Founder
Thelma Hardman

Purpose of Fund
The primary purpose of the fund shall be to provide financial support to charitable community projects and charities as suggested and approved by the Foundation's Board of Directors (the “Board”), and provided that such projects and contributions shall be consistent with the exempt purposes of the Foundation.

History of Fund
Thelma grew up in Paoli, Indiana. For three generations, her family has been involved in the woodworking and lumber industry of Southern Indiana.  Thelma was raised in the Quaker faith with a reverence for God and for trees.

Books were the “love of her life” since being introduced to the town library as a third grader.  She attended Earlham College and earned a teaching degree in English and History. She later attended Indiana University for Library Science.  She spent 28 years in the classroom and organized and managed six school libraries.  During summers, she found inspiration and enjoyment in classes at DePauw University, Indiana University, and the University of Vermont. She served as teacher-librarian at Greencastle High School from 1946-49 and in the same capacity at the Junior High from 1959-81.

At IU, she met Harold Hardman from Mitchell Indiana. Harold and Thelma Hardman spent 45 happy and productive years in Greencastle.  The Hardman family established this fund to show their appreciation of the schools, churches, and charitable organizations that have made Greencastle a great place to live and raise a family.
