The Reading Improvement Center Fund a Delta Kappa Gamma Starwalk Project

Year Founded
1999

Founder
Sharon Evans

Purpose of Fund
The primary purpose of the Fund shall be to provide financial support for the general operations of The Reading Improvement Center, Greencastle, Indiana 46135.

History of Fund
In 1998, Dr. Edna McGuire Boyd spoke to Delta Kappa Gamma’s international convention outlining her vision known as “Star Walk”. Dr. Boyd aimed to create a service project that would “meet a widely recognized educational need” and would offer a “creative approach” to an education issue. Delta Kappa Gamma members would work within their communities on projects aimed at “improved learning for students, new stimulation for teachers, growing confidence in public education, and pride in the local school.”

In 1991, Delta Kappa Gamma’s local chapter adopted the Reading Improvement Center as its “Star Walk” project. The service organization provided help for the Reading Improvement Center’s new after-school enrichment program at Castlebury Apartments. The first year’s contribution supported free homework help to students. The center then began to offer a more structured plan that focused on helping children in grades one through four with reading and math. In 1992, DePauw Bonner Scholars began to assist as tutors.
