History of FundAuthor 1

The Putnam County Public Library Author Series Endowment Fund was founded in 2007 to provide general financial support for the Conversation with the Author Series. The Endowment sustains the wonderful opportunity for Putnam County residents to experience nationally acclaimed, as well as local, writers reading and sharing their work. The series began in September 2004 with fiction writer, Alyce Miller, who not only read for the public at the library, but also visited Greencastle High School. Succeeding writers in the series have reached out to the community in similar ways.

In 2006, novelist Mary Doria Russell met with North Putnam High School students at a coffee shop for dinner to discuss one of her novels the students read for class. In the spring of 2007, the library was very fortunate to have nationally acclaimed poet, Kay Ryan—the sixteenth United States Poet Laureate. Then, in 2008, author/illustrator Chris Soentpiet visited South Putnam High School and Middle School, as well as Cloverdale High School, to present a slideshow and drawing demonstration. Later that year, Mark Spragg, author of An Unfinished Life, was the Putnam County READS author. He met with a group of North Putnam seniors before giving a talk at the library.

The series has featured local talent as well. In the winter of 2008, the “Airpoets,” a group of Indiana poets including two former Indiana Poet Laureates and local resident Joe Heithaus, read their collection of poems, some of which are featured on stained-glass windows at the Indianapolis International Airport. More recently, fiction writer and local resident, Greg Schwipps, gave a reading in the spring of 2011. Also, Children’s writer, Claudia Mills, led a “Celebration of Authors” event with student authors from Ridpath and Deer Meadow Elementary schools. Children’s author/illustrator Troy Cummings, another local resident, was featured in the winter of 2011.

The Endowment supports a variety of literature including poets, novelists, writers, illustrators, and children’s authors.  Whether it is a reading, a panel discussion, a workshop, or a book discussion over dinner, the Putnam County Public Library Author Series Endowment helps fulfill Putnam County’s creativity.
