Purpose of Fund
To establish and/or maintain a genealogy room and related genealogy programs within the Putnam County Public Library.

History of Fund

Born November 16, 1907 in Russellville, Indiana, Cyril grew up with both a brother and a sister.  Cyril grew up in a community full of Clodfelters.  Malcolm Romine was his second cousin; they shared the same great grandfather, Solomon Clodfelter. Malcolm Romine quoted 9 year old Cyril as saying that he wished that he had “the common name of Clodfelter, rather than the odd name of Johnson.”

Cyril Johnson graduated from Russellville High School in 1927, after which he earned his BA from DePauw University and then his MA from Indiana State University. He then went on to teach for Burns City, Waveland, Fillmore, and Putnamville; additionally, he served as a guidance counselor at Turkey Run. He then retired as Guidance Director in 1974. While remaining active as an educator and counselor, Cyril also remained active as a farmer. He spent his free time looking up family history, recording cemetery records, gardening, working as State Secretary for the Sons of American Revolution, as well as remaining active in the Putnam County Historical Society, the Putnam County Cemetery Board, several genealogical societies, and the Russellville Masonic Lodge.

Continuing his history of giving to the community, Cyril L. Johnson, a former teacher and guidance counselor in Putnam County, wrote into his will, a bequest for the establishment of an endowment whose purpose would serve “the Greencastle-Putnam County Library” to “establish, or if need be, to construct, a room solely for genealogical use and purpose.” A highly educated lover of history, Cyril L. Johnson knew the impact of studying family history could have on the lives of individuals as well as the contributions it could make to Putnam County as a whole. In addition to the bequest, Mr. Johnson left his records to the Library. The Cyril L. Johnson Fund for Putnam County Library Genealogy Room remains dedicated to serving the historical and genealogical needs of the community in which Cyril L. Johnson both lived and worked.
