The primary purpose of the fund shall be to provide financial support to North Putnam Dollars for Scholars.
The Zerkel Family Scholarship is to be awarded to a graduate of North Putnam High School or its successor who exemplifies a strong work ethic, honesty, a commitment to the pursuit of life-long learning, a strong work ethic, volunteerism, participation in extra-curricular activities, and an appreciation of the arts and physical well-being.
History of Fund
Alan and Mary, like their families before them, worked in public education. Mary’s maternal grandfather taught in a one room school house in Elkhart County. Alan’s father had a lifelong teaching and administrative career in Decatur. Alan and Mary worked for twenty years with students in the North Putnam Community School Corporation. As Alan and Mary were encouraged to devote their professional careers to serving others through education, this scholarship is created to offer encouragement to a graduating NPHS senior with a similar dream.
