Susan & Gary Lemon Community Endowment

Gary and Susan Lemon

Year Founded

Gary and Susan Lemon

Purpose of Fund
The primary purpose of the Fund shall be to provide unrestricted financial support to the programs and purposes of the Putnam County Community Foundation, Putnam County, Indiana.

History of Fund
Gary and Susan Lemon have been residents of Greencastle and Putnam County since 1976. Gary holds a PhD in economics from the University of Kansas and is Professor of Economics and Management at DePauw University. He was Chair of the Economics and Management Department from 1983 to 1992 and from 1999 to 2013 served as the Director of the McDermond Center for Management and Entrepreneurship and Director of the Management Fellows Program. Prior to his tenure at DePauw Gary was employed by General Electric as a financial analyst. Gary is a member of the Greencastle Redevelopment Commission and serves on the Greencastle/Putnam County Development Center board. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Financial Group where he is currently chairperson of the Investment Committee. Susan holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Kansas and spent her social work career in healthcare social work, retiring in June 2013 after 31 years as Director of Social Work Services for Hendricks Regional Health. Susan was appointed to the Putnam County Community Foundation Board in 2013 and has served on the Youth Philanthropy Committee.  Previous board service includes Cummins Behavioral Health, Mental Health America Putnam County (formerly PCMHA), Senior Services and the Indiana chapter of the Society for Social Work Leadership in Healthcare.

Gary and Susan have been married for 43 years and are the parents of two adult sons. Mark and his wife Beth reside in Alexandria, Virginia; Mark is Manager for the Grant Thornton LLP Public Sector practice and Beth is a Registered Nurse at Dominion Hospital.  Michael and his wife Meredith reside in New Orleans, Louisiana; Michael is a History Teacher at the Isidore Newman School and Meredith is Gulf Program Director for SouthWings, an environmental conservation organization.

In a heaartfelt quote, both have said, "Although raised and educated in Kansas we now call Indiana home. Establishing an endowment at the Putnam County Community Foundation allows us the opportunity to return something to the community where we live and where we established our careers and raised our family. Many things have changed during the 38 years we have lived in the Greencastle and Putnam County Community; some of those changes were anticipated, however many were not. Given our rapidly changing world, it seems likely that our community and the needs of its residents will continue to change as well. For this reason we have chosen to establish an endowment which is unrestricted, allowing the Community Foundation to respond to new situations as they arise and to address the aspirations and needs of the community, even as those needs and aspirations continue to change."
