Year Founded

Neil and Michele Irwin

Purpose of Fund
The purpose of the Fund shall be to provide financial support to charitable projects and agencies as suggested by Neil and Michele Irwin.

History of Fund
Although Michele and Neil Irwin have lived in Arizona for more than forty years, the Indiana natives remain involved in the Putnam County community and Neil’s family farm near Mt. Meridian. They established the R. Neil and Michele Irwin Fund in 2012 to support Putnam County organizations and projects with a focus toward social services, education, historic preservation, and animal welfare.

A 1959 graduate of Fillmore High School, Neil received a BS in Civil Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute in 1963. He served in the US Army and worked in the construction industry before entering Indiana University Law School. After graduating with honors in 1971, he and Michele moved to Phoenix where he began his law career. He is a senior Partner in the Phoenix office of the international law firm Bryan Cave LLP. Neil has served on the boards of many Phoenix-area civic and non-profit organizations and is on the Board of Visitors at the IU Maurer School of Law in Bloomington.

Michele is a 1963 graduate of Greencastle High School. She attended Indiana University, earning a BA in Fine Arts in 1967 and a Masters in Art Education in 1971.  Neil and Michele were married in 1969. She taught art in public schools in Indiana and Phoenix for five years, then became involved in community organizations and served on non-profit boards and city commissions supporting the arts, education and historic preservation. Those interests lead to her 20-year career as a community relations consultant and public policy advocate.

Within only one year of its establishment, the R. Neil and Michele Irwin fund has granted donations to organizations such as Mental Health America of Putnam County, the Greencastle Splash Park, the Gobin UMC Anti-Poverty Program, Hope Haven Horse Farm, the Putnam County Museum, and several more.
