Putnam County Imagination Library Endowment

Former Library Board with a Visiting Author

Year Founded

Putnam County Library

Purpose of Fund
To provide financial support to the Putnam County Public Library for the purpose of the Imagination Library Program, providing monthly books to Putnam County Preschoolers.

History of Fund
In July of 2011, with the assistance of the Putnam County Community Foundation, the Friends of the Putnam County Library, and the Putnam County Public Library, Imagination Library was launched in Putnam County. This program fosters a love of reading among Putnam County's preschool children and their families by providing them with a specially selected book each month.┬áThe books are mailed, free of charge, directly to the recipient’s homes. Any child who is a resident of Putnam County and is five years or younger can sign up for the program.

As the program continued to grow, over seven hundred children, thirty-five percent of Putnam County’s eligible population, became involved. Given the success of Imagination Library, the Putnam County Library Board chose to establish an Endowment with the Community Foundation to ensure a secure financial future for the program. On July 10th, 2013, the trustees unanimously approved the application to the Putnam County Community Foundation Endowment Builder Program. The library Trustees, in full support, agreed to fund said endowment with a gift of twelve thousand dollars. This decision was made at a time when Alice Greenburg, an impactful library director, had recently announced her retirement. The trustees chose to honor her service to the library and to recognize her full support of Imagination Library program.
